This was reported by the Uzbek editorial office of Radio Liberty, citing statements of eyewitnesses and sources in law enforcement agencies.
According to a resident of the Karakul district, Asad Salomov, he witnessed how representatives of local authorities took away about 40 women living in a disadvantaged neighborhood. “I watched from the balcony. They lined up all the women, took a roll call, put them on a bus and took them to the cotton harvest,” Salomov said.
Information about the involvement of prostitutes in cotton harvesting was confirmed by law enforcement agencies on condition of anonymity. “We brought these women out to pick cotton. They said that we would use their previous cases and fine them. And now they pick cotton very well,” noted a local police officer.
It is reported that, in addition to women of easy virtue, registered drug addicts and alcoholics were sent to harvest cotton.
In September, in the Samarkand region of Uzbekistan, local authorities introduced a ban on holding weddings and banquets in restaurants and cafes in connection with the start of the cotton harvest. According to local residents, the order is oral, but the owners of the establishments strictly comply with it.
