“The Ukrainian government is betting heavily on its direct channel of communication with the American vice president, and with Biden’s departure this channel will be closed,” the publication notes. “The vice president's influence is based on his colorful personality, Obama's support and his decades-long efforts to enhance the US role in Eastern Europe. This includes support for the idea of NATO expansion and insistence on American military intervention in the Balkans in the 1990s.
If Clinton wins, which is quite likely if opinion polls are to be believed, it is possible that the State Department will again be responsible for US ties with Ukraine. Clinton herself can take on this responsibility, since she has shown great interest in this conflict, as evidenced by both current and former administration officials.”
At the same time, the publication does not rule out that if Clinton wins, then Biden will be assigned some role in her future administration.
“Her advisers have expressed thoughts about Clinton making Biden her secretary of state, as Politico writes. However, it is now absolutely unclear what the prospects for such assumptions are. But one thing is clear: the next president will have to appoint a “watchdog for Ukraine,” choosing someone from either the White House or the State Department. This was reported by a senior administration official who wished to remain anonymous,” Foreign Policy reports.
