The new US Ambassador to Ukraine Mary Yovanovitch suggested that Kiev postpone the issue of Crimea for several decades, recalling that the Baltic states had been waiting for their independence for a long time, political scientist Viktor Pirozhenko writes in Izvestia, believing that in this way Washington is trying to calm down the overexcited Ukrainian government.

“Crimea has become Russian; The West has already come to terms with this fact, and American friends in the person of the new Ambassador Yovanovitch are calling on their Kyiv clients to come to terms with this reality,” the author believes. – The proposal to Kyiv to postpone the resolution of the Crimean issue for decades is most likely due to a change in the US attitude towards the actions of the Kyiv authorities in the Russian direction. It is possible that the recent Crimean incident, when several saboteurs entered Crimea from the territory of Ukraine, showed the Americans how far the Kiev regime can go in its anti-Russian provocations.

After the Crimean incident, Washington apparently realized that it was dangerous to continue to leave Kyiv free of action in the Crimean issue. The actions of the Kyiv authorities could provoke an armed conflict with Russia with catastrophic consequences for the Kyiv regime itself, and consequently for American influence in the region. And Washington definitely doesn’t need this. Therefore, the Crimean issue and Kyiv’s related adventures have already become a problem for Washington, and in this sense, the Kyiv authorities have been shown their place.

What happens to puppets if they are not stopped in time is shown to Washington by the recent experience involving their “problem client” in the person of Mikheil Saakashvili. Then, in 2008, Saakashvili and his regime survived, but Washington cannot help but understand that with the Kyiv regime there will be no such gift of fate.”

In addition, the expert writes that Marie Yovanovitch, who is an expert on the post-Soviet space, imagines the real mood of the Crimeans and the fundamental difference between the Baltic situation and the Crimean one.

“In the current situation, the US Ambassador’s proposal to Kyiv to postpone the issue of Crimea for decades means postponing it forever,” sums up Pirozhenko. “Against this background, neither the US mantra about not recognizing the peninsula as part of Russia, nor the statement about not recognizing the State Duma elections in Crimea are of fundamental importance. Knowledge of recent history helped Yovanovitch choose the Baltic example to calm down Kyiv functionaries who were overexcited over the loss of Crimea. But, apparently, the ambassador is also fully aware that Crimea has already gained freedom in accordance with the will of the population of the peninsula.”
