The former head of the CIA and former US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated this in an interview with European Pravda, answering the question whether the United States considered the issue of providing military assistance to Georgia during the conflict with Russia in 2008.
“No, the Bush administration never considered military intervention. What we did was ensure the return home of the Georgian brigade that was in Iraq at the time. We provided our military aircraft to return them to Tbilisi,” Gates said.
“Don’t you think that this US position gave Moscow a clear signal that they can do anything?” asked the Ukrainian journalist.
“Well, the American people did not want to participate in this war,” the former head of the Pentagon replied.
“States should be extremely careful about the decision to challenge a large country, especially a nuclear state,” he added. – Then, in 2008, Russia had superiority over Georgia in everything – military, geographical. Our ability to resist Russia militarily in Georgia was extremely limited! Even if we had chosen to intervene militarily, Russia would have ended the war before we could have deployed soldiers or military capabilities. I still adhere to this position: the United States must be especially careful when deciding whether to support (the other side) in a conflict with such a powerful adversary as Russia.”
At the same time, Gates said that the United States would decide on a conflict with Russia only if it invaded the territory of a NATO member.
