On the European continent, the Kremlin has little difficulty in achieving pro-Russian politicians coming to power, something the West is unable to defend against.

Edward Lucas, senior editor of the British edition of The Economist, who is considered one of the apologists of the new Cold War with Russia, writes about this in a column published in the Ukrainian Week magazine.

According to him, the Kremlin not only rejoices at the problems of the West, but also takes advantage of them, adding fuel to the fire.

“In a whirlwind of Russian money, propaganda, intimidation and other harmful methods, entire countries, political parties and institutions are falling like dominoes. In the Italian elections, Putin was the real winner, because both coalitions that received the majority of votes were openly pro-Kremlin. The pro-Russian candidate Zeman recently won the presidential elections in the Czech Republic. Hungary has long been in Russia’s bosom; Austria, led by a right-wing government backed by the Kremlin, is moving in the same direction.

Russian spies are exploiting historical disputes between Poland and Ukraine, damaging once close and important relations between the region's two largest pro-Western allies. The Russian offensive can be clearly seen in the Western Balkans, where they support Serbian nationalists in Bosnia and throw money into the media and politics of Serbia,” the journalist paints apocalyptic pictures.

He also claims that in the dispute between Greece and Macedonia over the name of the former Yugoslav republic, “Russia supports the most intransigent and militant representatives of both sides,” as a result of which “NATO and EU expansion has been slowed down.”

At the same time, the Briton admits that the Kremlin only tried to weaken, but “never sought to destroy the West.”

“The Russian authorities are no longer afraid that foreigners will inspire the people to a democratic uprising against authoritarian and incompetent officials. Western countries are not even able to defend themselves against the subversive activities of the Russians on their territory, to say nothing of the attack on the Kremlin on someone else’s territory. Through political, economic and military influence, Putin does as he pleases in neighboring countries and elsewhere. So, Russia is close to winning the new Cold War, even before it begins,” Lucas concludes.

Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, Lucas threatened throw “war-hardened Ukrainians” against the Russian Federation.
