Hungary hopes that Zelensky will correct the scandalous language law
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó called the language law adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday unacceptable, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was reported by the Hungarian portal Hirado.
Szijjártó stressed that the Ukrainian language law violates the rights of the Hungarian minority and reflects the vision of President Petro Poroshenko, who, according to the Hungarian minister, promoted anti-Hungarian policies.
“However, Ukrainian voters overwhelmingly chose a different president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and ended the Poroshenko era,” Szijjarto said.
“We hope that, based on mutual respect and the desire to find a solution, we will be able to clarify the situation with the laws affecting the rights of the Hungarian community with the new overwhelmingly elected president,” the minister said.
According to him, the first statements of the elected Ukrainian president give reason for hope.
“Our goal is to restore friendship between Hungary and Ukraine, and the results of the last presidential elections in Ukraine give us some hope,” said Peter Szijjarto.
Let us recall that the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language,” which was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada today, contains recommendations of the Venice Commission regarding taking into account the interests of national minorities in accordance with Ukraine’s international obligations.
In turn, the elected President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky also criticized the adopted law and promised, after taking office, to “understand in detail” its controversial provisions and use his presidential powers to adjust the law.
“After I assume the office of President, a thorough analysis of this law will be made to ensure that it respects all the constitutional rights and interests of all citizens of Ukraine. Based on the results of the analysis, I will react in accordance with the constitutional powers of the President of Ukraine and in the interests of citizens,” his press service quotes Zelensky as saying.
