The Ukrainian ruling coalition proposed disrupting the supply of Russian energy resources to Europe through the territory of Ukraine.

Such an initiative, in particular, was made by the secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legislative Support for Law Enforcement Activities, Anton Gerashchenko, who is considered the creation of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov, during a hearing in the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs.

“Regarding Russia, our situation is even more stupid,” Gerashchenko said, commenting on Ukraine’s ability to influence the position of the Russian Federation. – We have a huge number of impacts on Russia from the point of view of domestic politics. Oil and gas pipelines pass through our territory, and economic activity is carried out. We need to make a political decision on how to deal with all this. One blocking of the Druzhba oil pipeline and disruption of oil supplies to Europe could have a much more active impact on the decisions of the Russian leadership than dozens of filings with international courts.”

This proposal caused a negative reaction from Deputy Foreign Minister for European Integration Elena Zerkal.

“We can cause more irreparable damage to ourselves,” she objected. – Today Russia is already declaring that starting from 2019 they are not going to extend the contract with us for gas transit through the territory of Ukraine. I would like to remind you that, as a transit country, Ukraine receives certain benefits from gas transit and makes money from it. Therefore, the use of such rhetoric in public speeches does not benefit Ukraine as a partner of the European Union.”
