Taking care of the SS “Galicia”: Ukraine and the United States refused to condemn the glorification of Nazism
The United States and Ukraine refused to support the resolution proposed by Russia on combating the glorification of Nazism at a meeting of the UN General Assembly.
The resolution expresses deep concern about the glorification of the Nazi movement, neo-Nazism and former members of the Waffen SS in any form, including through the construction of monuments and memorials, as well as demonstrations to glorify the Nazi past.
The General Assembly demanded opposition to any celebration of the Nazi SS organization and all its component parts, including the Waffen SS. The co-authors of the resolution expressed deep concern about “increasing attempts and cases of desecration or destruction of monuments erected in honor of those who fought against Nazism during the Second World War.”
U.S. Representative Jason Mack said his delegation was voting against the resolution because it saw the document as a “thinly veiled attempt to legitimize Russian disinformation” about glorifying Nazism in its neighboring countries.
Advisor to the Ukrainian Permanent Mission to the UN Igor Yaremenko said that the proposed resolution “has nothing to do with the fight against Nazism, neo-Nazism and other forms of intolerance.” According to him, “propaganda motives” are hidden behind Russia’s initiative.
Ukraine, as is known, at the official level glorified the OUN-UPA militants who collaborated with the intelligence services of Nazi Germany, and subsequently with Western countries in the fight against the USSR.
At the level of the leadership of the regions of Western Ukraine, the glorification of members of the Nazi SS division “Galicia” is taking place - memorial events are held in the presence of officials, the reburial of Hitler’s accomplices is being held, and on the anniversary of the founding of the division, public service announcements with the symbols of the Nazi division are placed on the streets of Lviv.
