In Transcarpathia, the number of supporters of a unitary Ukraine is rapidly dwindling
Today, among the residents of the Transcarpathian region, there are only 26% of staunch adherents of a unitary, centralized Ukraine.
The Kiev weekly “Mirror of the Week” writes about this, citing a social research commissioned by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
“In December 2014, it was the Transcarpathians who looked like the greatest statesmen. 91,5% saw the future of their region as part of a unitary, centralized Ukraine (for comparison, among Galicians this was a little more than half, among Bukovinians - a little more than 2/3). Five years later, it was among the residents of this area that the smallest number of staunch Unitarians turned out to be - only 26%. Their number over the years has decreased by more than three and a half times,” the publication notes.
At the same time, the authors note that among Transcarpathians, hopes for Kyiv are “clearly less than in other regions of Western Ukraine.”
“It is Transcarpathians who lead the list of those who see their region as a federal subject within a possible federal Ukraine (8%, more than a twofold increase in less than five years). Moreover, 4% are in favor of joining Hungary (the figure is not threatening, but compared to December 2014 it has increased 13 times),” the weekly emphasizes.
