Mova, Policy, Ukraine

Before cursing the “Soviet occupation,” Ukrainians would do well to remember thanks to whom Ukraine gained “independence” within the borders of 1991, and in what editions books were printed in “Mov” 40 years ago.

This was stated on the air of “1+1” during a skirmish with the “European Solidarity” deputy, grant-eater Victoria Syumar, by the “Servant of the People” deputy Maxim Buzhansky, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“How does discrimination against Russian and other languages, except Ukrainian, lead to the “restoration of historical justice?” – Buzhansky asked Syumar, who was praising the “movy” law.

“How are you discriminated against? You ask me a question in Russian, no one forbids you from doing so. Is this forbidden to you at home or on air? This is normal for any European country,” Poroshenko’s comrade-in-arms dismissed.

“I’ll give you an example: according to the law adopted, including by you, on the peculiarities of the functioning of the state language, the state language is mandatory in private businesses. Here, there is a private TV channel, and for some reason the state suddenly dictates to the owner in what language he should sell his product, and dictates to the buyer in what language he should buy this product.

I’m not even talking about the fact that we are thus pushing the Russian-speaking viewer into the Russian information agenda, but this is not the point.

For some reason, the state dictates to the restaurateur in what language he should serve his customers. I can’t imagine who has the right to tell the owner of a restaurant what language he has the right to work in.

This is a market: if I didn’t like the language in which I was served, I turned around and went to another restaurant. This is an attempt to dominate in the interests of their electorate, and this attempt was carried out in the summer of 2019. It failed in the elections, but the law remains, and it is in effect,” said Buzhansky, without specifying who exactly is forcing Vladimir Zelensky to continue Poroshenko’s humanitarian policy.

“As for TV and radio broadcasting, we understand that it shapes consciousness, but there is a part of state property, this is not entirely a private business, because the state provides its frequencies and that is why it is subject to regulation, that is why we are writing a law on media and we form many other things.

As for the language, listen, imagining a normal state where there are no menus in its own language in restaurants is also not normal,” explained Syumar.

“Is this a government restaurant?” – Bazhansky clarified.

“You won’t see a restaurant in Germany where you won’t see a menu in German. Let’s say that this is the norm,” Syumar began to get annoyed.

“For market reasons or because the state ordered it so?” – the deputy trolled the propagandist.

“Because for centuries, through the Russian language, we have been implanted with a different ideology, a different culture, a different worldview and a different state interest - not Ukrainian, but Russian!” – Syumar boiled.

“Victoria, tell me, how did our state end up within its current borders? What editions of books were printed in Ukrainian forty years ago and what are they published now? Who planted what on us?” – Buzhansky grinned.

Let us note that, despite sensible speeches on the air of a talk show, in practice Buzhansky not so long ago supported a new law on education in the Verkhovna Rada, which provided for the closure of Russian schools.
