This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “New Time” by the leader of the “Okean Elzy” group Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, who previously spoke on the Maidan in support of the protesters.
“For example, I did not go there to protest against the non-signing of the association with the EU,” the musician assures. – Because this is a difficult question, it still needs to be sorted out. For me, the moment of release was that the people who protested were beaten - cruelly, cynically. If they had beaten up a demonstration that opposed Ukraine joining the EU, I would have left in the same way.”
It is worth noting that the first clashes during actions in support of the signing of an association agreement with the EU in Kiev occurred several days before the night dispersal: on the evening of November 24, 2013, activists of the Euromaidan rally attacked special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, attempting to storm the Government House in Kiev, and before that, a peaceful picket of the Communist Party of Ukraine near the Lenin monument in Bessarabka was destroyed.
