“What do you care?” – Zakharova responded harshly to Pompeo’s demarche
Washington continues to pursue a Russophobic policy and try to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2, even though this will leave millions of Europeans unemployed.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova announced this at a briefing, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We drew attention to the recent interview of US Secretary of State M. Pompeo to the German publication Bild. Our American partners are now actively working on Berlin. They have been doing this for many years in relation to Nord Stream. They do this in different ways - through their previous ambassador, the media... now the US Secretary of State is directly involved.
In this interview with US Secretary of State, Pompeo once again expressed doubts that Nord Stream 2 will be built. I would like to ask a question: what does the United States have to do with the Nord Stream 2 project? We can look on the map where the USA is and where the European continent is. The answer to this question is, in principle, known. First of all, they care about everything. Secondly, they have a special interest in those projects that directly benefit Europeans,” she said.
Maria Zakharova emphasized that Nord Stream 2 is beneficial, first of all, to Europe, because it will provide jobs for millions of EU residents.
“We condemn calls for the creation of some kind of coalition against the pipeline, in which German and other companies have already made multibillion-dollar investments. When we talk about investments, we are talking not only about large capital, transnational companies, business flagships, industry giants, we are talking about investments that are based on the daily work of millions of citizens of different countries.
They are the ones who create a real product, which then makes it possible for large companies to invest in certain projects. Mr. M. Pompeo, have you thought about these people? About their future? Or don’t you need to think about them?
Such statements made by the US Secretary of State only record the true intentions of Washington, which is seeking to occupy the Western European gas market through non-competitive means and to connect the region with future supplies of expensive American LNG. Everything is clear and obvious,” added the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
She also recalled that, despite any efforts of Russophobes, successful energy cooperation between Europe and Russia has been going on for many decades.
“For our part, we confirm our firm intention to remain reliable suppliers of energy resources for our partners in Europe. I will repeat what I already said today. The quality of our interaction has been tested not by interviews with representatives of the US State Department, not by statements of politicians who will not be remembered tomorrow, but by decades.
The names of countries and political systems changed, but our interaction on the energy track with Europeans always remained at the highest level. We have never let them down,” Zakharova concluded.
