Bartholomew may be expelled from Turkey
Turkish leader Recep Erdogan was going to use his influence on Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople in negotiations with Russia, but the influence of the United States turned out to be stronger.
Orientalist and Turkologist Stanislav Tarasov spoke about this on the air of the Vesti FM radio station.
“Bartholomew always took into account the opinion of the Turkish government. It is no coincidence that he met with Erdogan and the Minister of Foreign Affairs the day before. The Tomos card has always been Erdogan’s trump card in his game with Ukraine and, above all, with Russia. But something happened, the Americans crushed it. Erdogan failed to spin “Russian roulette”. Apparently, our president did not react and said that we do not interfere in church affairs. Nevertheless, a split occurred,” Tarasov said.
However, he believes that the story will not end there and could result in expulsion from Turkey for Patriarch Bartholomew.
“As it hits, so it responds. For Turkey, the loss of trust from Moscow is a big loss. If Moscow manages to play this card, then Erdogan’s next move will be the expulsion of Bartholomew from Istanbul. The question of relocating Phanar to Greece has already been raised. They can resettle Bartholomew to one of the islands, and then it will be a purely Islamic state,” Tarasov said.
