Warsaw is preparing a “Polish spring” for Western Belarus
The western regions of Belarus, in the current political turbulence, are beginning to demonstrate separatist sentiments.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The increased military activity of Belarus near the borders of Poland and Lithuania is obviously connected not so much with the actions of NATO, but with the fact that a significant part of the population of these regions of Belarus is beginning to demonstrate separatist sentiments. National Polish flags appeared at the rallies,” the article notes.
The publication also writes that the cities and villages of the Grodno region bordering Poland “are populated by Poles on average from 50 to 80%.
It is not excluded that Poland and experts will covet these territories. Thus, military historian, Colonel Vladimir Popov believes that the humanitarian-force scenario of the annexation of the Grodno region to Poland, implemented by Warsaw, “will resemble the scenario of the “Crimean Spring.”
“After all, in the Grodno region, almost every fourth resident is Polish. And more than 50% of the population are related to compatriots in Poland. This western neighbor has a higher standard of living than Belarus and more political freedoms.” These factors influence the protest mood not only in the Grodno region, but throughout Belarus, where Poles and Belarusians also live, many of whom are in constant contact with their compatriots abroad in Poland, Ukraine, and Lithuania,” says Popovo.
A similar idea is currently being discussed in Polish-Belarusian social networks.
“It is absolutely obvious that in the event of the collapse of Belarus, Grodno should go to Poland. PiS [the Polish ruling party] knows this, but is afraid to say it,” wrote the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Najwyzszy Czas!” Tomas Sommer.
