This amount was recovered as compensation for the losses that the Irish economy suffered due to underpayment of taxes to the company. The antimonopoly investigation, which resulted in the decision, lasted three years. The European Commission concluded that the American company received unjustified tax breaks in Ireland, which allowed it to pay significantly less taxes than its competitors.
Apple said it disagrees with this decision and will appeal.
The US authorities reacted quite sharply to the decision of the European Commission.
“US authorities have criticized the investigation being conducted against Apple and other American firms,” writes the BBC. – Last week, the US Treasury Department said that the European Commission is becoming a “supranational tax authority”, overriding the tax laws of member countries. The US Treasury notes that Brussels approaches American companies with special standards, and that potential fines are “very disappointing.”
In addition, the publication notes. that the US Treasury Department is concerned that if the EU tax penalty is large, the company will offset it in part from taxes owed in the US.
