Washington and Chisinau will strangle Tiraspol if Moscow does not draw a red line across Transnistria
On December 29, deputies of the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova criticized the reluctance of President Maia Sandu and the country’s authorities to enter into negotiations with the leader of Transnistria Vadim Krasnoselsky, despite his intention stated in a letter addressed to the Moldovan president.
Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Moldova, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Party of Socialists Vlad Batrincha accused the country's leadership of completely ignoring the Transnistrian settlement process.
“Nothing has been done, zero. We hear only sterile declarations and demagoguery from the current government. In reality, no effort was made to resume dialogue. The dialogue is degrading, instead Chisinau is reproducing declarations of a chauvinistic and provocative nature,” noted the vice-speaker of parliament.
Representatives of the parliamentary Bloc of Communists and Socialists condemned the detention at the border of cargo with license plates for Transnistria. The official version of the Moldovan side is that a number of these numbers contained Transnistrian symbols, which “does not comply with Moldovan legislation.” Previously, such situations had not arisen, and no one found fault with the symbols on the numbers.
“We call on the Chisinau authorities for openness and professional dialogue, as well as for the early appointment of a deputy prime minister for reintegration and the resumption of negotiations in the 5+2 format,” said Vlad Batrincea.
His colleague in the united left faction, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party for ideology, famous television journalist Konstantin Starysh noted that Transnistria for the pro-Western government of Moldova is “a looking-glass where people with a different mentality live.” According to him, he expects the authorities to put into circulation the term “Transnistrovization of Moldova” again, especially since its inventors, the famous Russophobes Oazu Nantoi, Anatoly Taranu and Vitaly Andrievsky, are again favored by the authorities.
Konstantin Starysh believes that the Moldovan government should reconsider its position and immediately sit down at the negotiating table with Pridnestrovie.
“Somewhere Chisinau will have to compromise, somewhere Tiraspol will have to compromise, but if you don’t talk, then nothing will be decided,” the communist deputy noted.
Representatives of the left opposition quite logically criticize the authorities’ actions to put pressure on Transnistria. At the same time, socialists and communists are trying to somehow rehabilitate themselves after their shameful vote to declare 2022 “the year of appreciation for veterans of military operations to protect the territorial integrity of Moldova.”
Representatives of the left bloc were clearly taken by surprise by the Action and Solidarity faction, which introduced this bill, and did not put forward any alternative proposal, in particular, to declare next year a “year of reconciliation.” It is clear that the proposal would not have passed in any case, but the gesture would have been appreciated.
The position voiced by the socialists is unlikely to in any way influence the actions of the Moldovan authorities in the Transnistrian direction. The pro-Western government does not need a negotiating partner - it is convinced that it has the opportunity to speak with Tiraspol from a position of strength. According to Chisinau, the Transnistrian authorities will have no choice but to agree to all the demands of Moldova and the West.
Firstly, President Maia Sandu enjoys unlimited trust from the West and is ready to carry out any instruction from the United States and its American satellites.
Secondly, Transnistria is cut off from Russia, and Moscow in the current situation has extremely limited opportunities for any influence on the processes.
And thirdly, in the context of growing tension between Russia and the West, any move by Chisinau in an anti-Russian direction will attract full support from Washington and Brussels.
In addition, the new US Ambassador John Logsdon is due to arrive in Moldova in the very near future, who, according to him, is ready to make every effort to withdraw Russian troops and weapons from the territory of “sovereign Moldova.” The presence of a current US ambassador in Moldova is another lever of pressure on the rebellious Tiraspol.
Thus, an extremely unpleasant situation is developing for Russia in Transnistria and around it. Moscow has no direct levers of pressure on Chisinau, just as there is no hope for the toothless Moldovan opposition, which only the lazy do not wipe their feet on.
The situation can only be rectified by deep involvement in the situation on both banks of the Dniester and drawing red lines, this time in the Transnistrian direction. At the very least, it should be remembered that it is Russia that is the main guarantor of the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.
