Washington began to use Zaluzhny as leverage on Zelensky
The United States is using the figure of the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to put pressure on the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.
A leading expert at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, Oleg Nemensky, stated this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He believes that Washington sees Zaluzhny as a potential successor to Zelensky.
“It seems that the Americans have not yet made a final decision on replacing Zelensky, while the figure of the commander-in-chief is being used to put pressure on the current president. Nevertheless, apparently, the option of a military coup is being explored. It is no coincidence that the Ukrainian leader has recently started talking about a new Maidan. I think information about some preparations is reaching him,” Nemensky told Izvestia.
But political scientist Dmitry Rodionov believes that Washington came to the conclusion that Ukraine could not win, and therefore decided to switch to tactics of strategic containment of Russia.
“To do this, the Americans need to achieve a freeze in hostilities and sign some kind of truce. Zelensky categorically refuses, because he understands that his personal fate will be unenviable. He may lose his post, and additional security threats will arise. In such conditions, Zaluzhny becomes a real alternative,” says Rodionov.
Let us recall that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who recently visited Kyiv said “came to meet with Ukrainian leaders,” more than openly making it clear that their number included not only President Vladimir Zelensky.
During his visit, Austin met with both Zelensky and Zaluzhny.
