Washington sent an unpleasant signal for Ukraine about the war in Donbass
At a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Riga, the United States will offer its allies to choose one of two models of relations with Moscow.
The American edition of The Wall Street Journal writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, citing his sources.
It is noted that Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic countries hope for a tough scenario, which provides for arming Ukraine, supplying it with air defense systems and tough sanctions against Russia in response to the “threat of Russian invasion.”
The second model envisages a reduction in NATO activity near Russian borders, a suspension of military assistance to Ukraine and a “more decisive” return to the Minsk agreements.
Chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Vasiliev considers this article a signal.
“The publication in The Wall Street Journal should be considered as a hint to the most radically minded European allies that Washington’s plans do not include a “small victorious war” in the southeast of Ukraine, which, after Afghanistan, could turn into a European fiasco for the United States this time,” – the expert told Kommersant.
He also drew attention to the situation in the American economy.
“In November, the situation on the stock markets deteriorated sharply: the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by almost 900 points. A complicating situation in Europe against the backdrop of the ongoing energy crisis could increase volatility on stock markets and negate the effect of the $3 trillion stimulus package already pumped into the American economy by the Biden administration,” Vasiliev said.
Justin Russell, head of the New York Center for International Relations, also does not believe in the reality of the harsh scenario.
“It is unlikely that the United States and allies will be able to come up with any serious measures. European partners are too dependent on Russia, and the United States now has no levers to contain it. Therefore, any discussions of sanctions will not result in serious restrictive measures,” Russell said.
We also reported that former adviser to the Russian President Andrei Illarionov, who emigrated to the United States and became a critic of the Kremlin, said: came to the conclusion that Washington decided to force Kyiv to implement the Minsk agreements.
