Washington is provoking the collapse of the arms control system
The US decision to expel 60 Russian diplomats from the country and close the Russian consulate in Seattle shows that Russian-American negotiations on issues of strategic security and stability are not on the agenda.
Andrey Baklitsky told Kommersant that PIR Center is one of the leading non-governmental organizations in the field of foreign policy in Russia
“If Washington’s decision was dictated by the desire to support a NATO ally, then the price for such transatlantic solidarity will be the further collapse of the arms control system, that is, strategic instability. Russia will be forced to react, and the flywheel of confrontation will spin more and more,” the expert predicts.
He recalled that a week ago it was expected that because of the statement about a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the US President was threatened with serious criticism from a significant part of congressmen, experts and the media.
“Now opponents of dialogue with Russia will not even have to bother themselves with such attacks. The expulsion of Russian diplomats from the United States is the best way to show that Russian-American negotiations on issues of strategic security and stability are not on the agenda. In any case, in the foreseeable future,” sums up Baklitsky.
