According to the newspaper, the statement will be made on April 24, which marks the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide. In this way, Biden will fulfill the promise he made during the election campaign.

According to experts, Washington is posing an open challenge to Turkey.

“Given the tensions in relations with Turkey and the Biden administration’s desire to take revenge on President Erdogan for his intractability on Syria, the South Stream gas pipeline project, the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems and many other topics, Joe Biden may well fulfill his election promise. Although this will be a purely political decision and a symbolic step, given the decision of Congress in 2019, the Biden team is making it clear that it has written off President Erdogan and will wait for his departure,” Anton Fedyashin, a professor at the American University in Washington, told Kommersant.

Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, also predicts an aggravation of relations between Ankara and Washington.

“The White House’s recognition of the fact of genocide will indicate a further politicization of relations with Turkey, over which hangs the shadow of the failed military coup attempt in Ankara, undertaken in July 2016, when Joe Biden was the American vice president,” says Vasiliev.

As is known, in Turkey they believe that circles close to the United States were behind the coup.

According to the political scientist, recognition of the genocide will not only increase tension in relations between the United States and Turkey, but also “opens up the possibility of active pressure to further destabilize the internal political situation in this country.”

“In addition, Washington, acting in alliance with Israel, is unlikely to tolerate Turkey’s geopolitical strengthening in the Near and Middle East and North Africa,” Vasiliev sums up.
