Washington is forcing Europe to abandon cheap Russian gas – Lavrov

Most anti-Russian attitudes in the energy sector are born in Washington, and then implemented in Europe “within the framework of the notorious transatlantic solidarity.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced this today at a meeting with European entrepreneurs.

“The paradox is that such a policy costs Americans nothing. They do not suffer losses and even hope to force the Europeans to switch from Russian gas to more expensive liquefied American gas. It is up to Europeans to decide how much this meets their interests in conditions when the Old World faces numerous challenges and threats,” Lavrov said.

According to him, joint purely commercial projects supported by EU member states and European energy companies are now being blocked or slowed down in the EU.

“I mean both South Stream and Nord Stream 2. Meanwhile, most experts argue that, given the decline in gas production in European countries, it will be difficult for Europe to manage without Russian energy resources in the foreseeable future,” Lavrov said.

The minister recalled that Russia and Turkey signed an agreement that provides for the construction of a gas pipeline in the direction of Greece.

“After the failure with South Stream, we will be ready to extend this line into the territory of the European Union only after receiving unambiguous official guarantees on paper,” Lavrov said.
