Ukraine faces another Chernobyl disaster if it refuses to purchase Russian nuclear fuel to please the Japanese-American company Westinghouse. The famous publicist Anatoly Wasserman writes about this in his column in the Izvestia newspaper.

According to him, nuclear reactors in Ukraine were built taking into account the consumption of Soviet, and now Russian, fuel and are technologically not suitable for imported fuel. Precedents with emergency situations when switching to another fuel have already happened in Eastern Europe, but then the accident was miraculously avoided.

“The first attempts to use overseas fuel rods in the Old World - in the Czech Republic - ended in such deformation that it was only a miracle that their housings did not rupture and radiation was released into the primary circuit (for safety, water from the reactor heats the water going into the turbine through a sealed wall). After this, Westinghouse spent several years studying the technical documentation purchased from consumers of our fuel rods and learned to do something similar. But neither physicists nor engineers can yet provide a guarantee of reliable operation: there will be new experiments and, possibly, accidents,” notes Wasserman.

According to him, due to the ongoing war in Donbass, Ukraine has lost a significant part of its industry and energy, which leads to constant failures and stoppages in the operation of nuclear power plants and thermal power plants.

“During two years of terror against Donbass, Kyiv has destroyed such a significant part of its industry in general and energy in particular that the remaining capacity is not enough for a stable regime and even nuclear power plants change the load several times a day... Kiev demands that reactors be started ten times a day “Let them explode, but some of the radioactive fallout will fall on Muscovites,” Wasserman sneers.
