“Vata, asshole, inadequate” – Ukrainian cultural figures supported the ban on Kusturica’s films
The Kiev magazine “Novoe Vremya” conducted a survey among Ukrainian cultural figures, asking whether they would now watch films won by a number of prestigious awards, including two Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, directed by Emir Kusturica, who stated that he considers Crimea part of Russia .

“And I’ve already looked at them all. The ones that were worth watching. A very good director. Just because he's an asshole doesn't change the fact that he's talented. And I knew before that he was “cotton wool.” This is how we should treat him,” said Odessa Maidan artist Alexander Roitburd.
At the same time, he clarified that Kusturica’s films, banned from showing in Ukraine, do not carry any harmful content, “but he himself honestly deserved the restriction on their public screening on large screens.”
“I haven’t watched Kusturica’s films for a long time,” admits director Vladimir Tikhy. – Perhaps because he has changed very much, not only ideologically, but also creatively. He has transformed himself so much that, in fact, he has become a kind of parody of what he made in the 1980-1990s - the films that made Kusturica’s name and which are considered masterpieces, despite what he says now.”
“Kusturica - “cotton wool”. Yes, he made a couple of good films in his time. So what? I don't watch his films now. I don’t accept inadequate people, regardless of their fame and the quality of their works,” says musician Sergei Fomenko (Foma), leader of the Mandri group.
In turn, writer and film scriptwriter Andrei Kokotyukha notes that the matter is not only in Kusturica.
“I don't know what to make of Oliver Stone's The Doors. An excellent film about my favorite band was made by a man who interviewed Viktor Yanukovych. It is such a shame for Kusturica to grow and grow. After all, at least someone respects Vladimir Putin for their love; there is even the term “friends of Putin.” That is, Kusturica reached the bottom, and Stone sank lower, because there are no “friends of Yanukovych”.
Seriously, over the past 20 years, Kusturica has done nothing to please film fans. And Stone has been around for a quarter of a century. It turns out that cultural losers become lovers of the “Russian world”. This means that Kusturica is exhausted as a creative personality. Yes, there are some good, even cult films. But movie lovers still rewatch the old ones. And they will. Only now, when recommending Time of the Gypsies to neophytes, I will clarify: “He was a good director, but he dried up and became stupid,” says Kokotyukha.
