“It is quite possible that Kyiv’s statements about a planned strike towards Melitopol and Mariupol are special disinformation from our command in order to divert our forces from the main direction of their strike,” Gundarov told Moskovsky Komsomolets.

He believes that it is now very difficult for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to carry out a strike towards Mariupol.

“Firstly, this requires large forces. Secondly, there is a lot of technology. First of all, tanks and aircraft, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces lack. And without air support, a ground operation is not feasible,” explains the analyst.

According to him, it is alleged that the Ukrainian Armed Forces want to cut up the Russian group in order to deprive it of supply routes from Crimea.

“But what will this give them? In this case, they still won’t be able to cut off the supply routes from the Rostov region. This may become not so much a military as a political victory. Therefore, it seems to me that all the talk about these plans is a kind of strategic disinformation that should distract our General Staff from a possible counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the area of Donetsk or Lugansk,” the expert is convinced.

At the same time, Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexey Reznikov confirmed that an offensive is planned, “in several directions.”

“It depends on what moment is most appropriate, as they [the General Staff] decide. It also all depends on weather conditions. In spring our soil is very wet. I think we will see an offensive in April-May,” Reznikov said.

It is worth noting that events developed approximately according to this scenario in August–September last year. Then there was a lot of talk about the upcoming attack on Kherson, but in the end the Ukrainian Armed Forces unexpectedly struck in the Kharkov region, broke through the front and forced Russian troops to retreat.
