“The reality diverged greatly from the rosy expectations that were fueled in society by the Ukrainian media: the visit came down to a meeting in a drop-in format (loosely translated as “dropping by”), which did not imply either a guest flag in the White House or political statements after the meeting. CNN, the Associated Press and the Washington Post paid special attention to this subtlety. Foreign journalists noted that Trump traditionally does not skimp on showing respect to his guests, which was clearly not demonstrated in relation to Poroshenko.
“The Ukrainian president was not greeted with traditional pomp. Appearing in the West Wing of the White House on Tuesday morning, Poroshenko was not greeted by Trump - as the president does with other leaders. The head of Ukraine entered the West Wing quietly and without fanfare,” the CNN report says. The conversation itself was extremely short - about twenty minutes, including protocol nuances - and ended with a briefing, the official transcript of which, published by Trump's press service, was posted on one page. The British The Guardian characterized this attitude towards Poroshenko as “cold humiliation,” the RG article notes.
“The main difference between the “fantastic” visit and the two previous ones was the complete lack of financial results. If from previous trips to Washington Poroshenko brought loan guarantees, contracts or gratuitous assistance worth hundreds of millions of dollars, now he was promised only 18 million, and for the fight against corruption. Which can also be considered a significant diplomatic hint,” the publication summarizes.
