Leading EU countries are against Ukraine's membership
The EU has divided opinions regarding Ukraine's potential entry into this association.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Mary Dezhevsky, a columnist for The Independant newspaper and an expert at the Valdai Club, stated this in a commentary to Izvestia, answering the question whether the European Union is really ready to accept Ukraine into its ranks or whether the current partnership will be enough for it.
“I think the EU is divided on this topic. Eastern Europe, Sweden and perhaps some other countries viewed rapprochement with Ukraine as preparation for its connection to the EU. Western countries – most of the “old” Europe – have always viewed the Association Agreement as an alternative to EU membership and continue to exclude any prospect of Ukraine joining the association,” Dezhevski said.
In her opinion, in the current situation, the advantage is on the side of the second group of countries, since the Association Agreement and the high level of investment are aimed at improving the standard of living and infrastructure of Ukraine, making it a richer and politically stable neighbor, but not a member of the EU.
