Venezuela divided Georgia and Armenia
The current coup attempt in Venezuela is being closely watched in Tbilisi, Yerevan and Baku.
Sergei Markedonov, associate professor of the department of foreign regional studies and foreign policy at the Russian State Humanitarian University, stated this in a commentary for the Bunin&Co telegram channel.
He recalled that Georgia immediately supported the US recognition of the Speaker of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guiado, as interim president.
“There has been active talk in Tbilisi that the restoration of the country’s territorial integrity will begin in the Western Hemisphere. After all, it was the two Latin American states of Nicaragua and Venezuela that recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Today there is a chance that with the departure of the charismatic Hugo Chavez’s ally Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s position will change. And then the number of states that believe that in Transcaucasia today there are not three, but five independent countries will decrease,” Markedonov said.
The expert believes that the motives of Armenia and Azerbaijan are much more interesting; in particular, it would seem that in the context of “color revolutions” the Armenian leader Nikol Pashinyan should have welcomed the offensive of the “Westerners” in Caracas.
“But the behavior of the Armenian prime minister once again shows the artificiality of all these conspiracy schemes. Pashinyan stated that destabilization in Venezuela has nothing to do with the “velvet revolution” in Armenia, since in the second case it was about non-violent actions and respect for the fundamental law of the country. This line, however, is not too surprising. Despite all the existing problems, it is extremely important for Pashinyan to maintain constructive relations with Moscow, and the Kremlin’s approaches to Venezuela are obvious,” the political scientist noted.
He also notes that Azerbaijan is also acting quite carefully.
“Baku is not trying to actively support one of the parties publicly. However, it is not possible to forget about the uniqueness of the strategic ally of the Caspian republic - Turkey. At one time, Ilham Aliyev established a partnership with Nicolas Maduro (he visited Baku in 2016 and held negotiations with his Azerbaijani colleague). Of course, Azerbaijan is not satisfied with any change of power as a result of mass protests simply due to the fact that the opposition will be able to view it as a kind of pattern,” Markedonov concluded.
