He announced this during a press conference with the heads of the Foreign Ministries of Ukraine, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Interfax-Ukraine writes.
“Dual citizenship is an absolutely European phenomenon. Therefore, our position is that in Europe you should not punish anyone just because a citizen has the citizenship of an EU member state and a non-EU country,” said the Hungarian Foreign Minister.
According to him, Budapest considers it unacceptable to punish Hungarian citizens for having both Hungarian and Ukrainian citizenship.
“We hope that we can come to bilateral agreements and not harm the Hungarians who live in Ukraine,” Szijjártó added.
In turn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin clarified that since Ukraine is in a state of armed conflict with Russia, the presence of dual citizenship is fundamentally unacceptable.
“We don’t want to open this Pandora’s box. (...) However, we are not talking about punishments,” Klimkin added.
