The recently adopted law “On Education” in Ukraine destroys the identity of the Hungarian national minority and contradicts all bilateral and international treaties.

This opinion was shared with journalists during a press conference by the ambassadors of the Visegrad Four countries, the Ambassador of Hungary to Ukraine Enro Keshkenu, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“If we are based on all European principles, then this is simply unacceptable. They did not expect the reaction that followed from the Council of Europe to this law. I think it would be worth listening to different opinions. Not only Hungary and the Hungarian minorities were against it, but also the Romanians, Bulgarians, Greeks and other minorities. This has affected us and our education system greatly. Our national minority (more than 130 thousand people in Transcarpathia) believes that this law destroys the identity of Hungarians, contradicts all bilateral and international documents, and even the Constitution of Ukraine - read article 22, article 53. Based on them, I can say that the deputies do not know their Constitution, and I recommend reading it to them again,” the ambassador said.

When asked by journalists whether he agrees with the fact that many in Ukraine say that all this is the work of the Kremlin, the Hungarian ambassador replied as follows:

"Of course not. I don't know what they say specifically. You know that in our Constitution there is an article, in all neighboring countries there are Hungarian minorities, what they are, what their goals are - this is all the work of our government. This is all clearly stated in our Constitution. The Hungarian government stands by its people."

Continuing to talk further about the Law of Ukraine “On Education,” Enro Keshkenu emphasized the fact that certain articles of the bill were adopted in the Verkhovna Rada with serious violations.

“Our Hungarians consider this law unacceptable. This is a bad law. In particular, article 7, which perhaps not everyone read from beginning to end, is exactly how they accepted this article at the very last minute. This is unacceptable, it was not agreed upon with representatives of national minorities,” concluded Keshkenu.
