Hungary has given back and is no longer blocking Ukraine’s path to NATO
Hungary lifted its veto on the adoption of the statement of the Ukraine-NATO Commission, since “at the last moment” Ukraine and NATO accepted the Hungarian proposals for the document, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, the press service of the Hungarian government reports.
“NATO member states and Ukraine accepted the Hungarian proposal for a joint NATO-Ukraine statement at the very last moment, after the official deadline had expired. This means that our position in support of Transcarpathian Hungarians has achieved results,” Szijjártó told state news agency MTI.
“In the end, they took our proposal into account, and, accordingly, the joint statement expresses support for the Hungarian community, which has been deprived of its rights, and calls on Ukraine to comply with international law and the requirements of international organizations. This once again makes it clear that Ukraine must return the rights that it took away from national minorities in the areas of education and other areas of life,” added the Hungarian minister.
According to him, Hungary “strives to maintain good neighborly relations with Ukraine and is ready to begin consultations with the Ukrainian administration, as a result of which we hope that we will be able to restore our previous good neighborly relations.”
“We continue to declare: a new president - new hope!” - said the minister.
The day before, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban noted that the NATO statement regarding Ukraine would not be approved by the Hungarian side without taking into account proposals for the Hungarian minority living in Transcarpathia.
