Making his first speech in parliament after taking the oath of office, Orban said: “We consider the Hungarian issue as a European issue. Hungarians who live in the Carpathian region have the right to dual citizenship, the rights of national community and autonomy,” Channel 5 reports.
He paid special attention to Ukraine, where the Hungarian minority - from 160 to 200 thousand - lives in the Transcarpathian region.
“The situation of 200000 ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine makes this issue particularly acute. The Hungarian community there should receive dual citizenship, all the rights of a national community, and it should also be given the opportunity to self-govern. These are our clear expectations from the new Ukraine that is now emerging,” Orban said.
At the same time, he noted that Hungary supports the government of Ukraine in its development of a democratic state.
