Hungary demanded that Ukraine recognize dual citizenship and threatened to expel the consul
Budapest promises similar measures if Kyiv decides to expel the Hungarian consul to Berehove, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated on Sunday before leaving for a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, reports the Hungarian publication Origo.
“If the Ukrainian side expels the Hungarian consul, this will not remain without a proportionate response from the Hungarian side, but there is hope that this can be avoided,” Szijjártó told reporters.
The minister confirmed that he would meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Klimkin in New York, adding that anti-Hungarian sentiments have recently increased in Ukraine. He connects this with preparations for presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
Szijjártó noted that the events of last week “went too far” and violated all “written and unwritten rules of international law and diplomacy,” as Ukrainian intelligence services “conducted a special operation at the consulate of Hungary, which is a NATO member.”
“Dual citizenship is common in Europe, and if Ukraine really wants to move towards the EU, it cannot question such an institution,” he said.
Szijjártó added that Hungary will continue to take steps that will slow down Ukraine’s movement towards the EU and NATO.
In the last week, a new crisis has begun in relations between Ukraine and Hungary. He was prompted by a video from the ceremony of accepting Transcarpathian residents into Hungarian citizenship, which took place at the consulate in Beregove. In the video, the consul urged Transcarpathians to hide their citizenship from the Ukrainian authorities.
In this regard, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin announced the possibility of expelling the consul.
