Hungary offers Ukraine a peace agreement and promises $50 million
Hungary offers Ukraine to conclude a peace agreement on the protection of national minorities, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjártó after a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Pavel Klimkin on the sidelines of the Warsaw Security Forum, the press service of the Hungarian government reports.
According to the proposal, the two countries should refrain from policies that could lead to the assimilation of national minorities and a change in the national composition of a particular region.
“The Ukrainian side promised to consider the proposal,” Szijjártó noted, expressing hope that the Hungarian and Ukrainian sides will discuss the details of the proposal at the next meeting in Milan, which is scheduled for December 7.
“It is clear that we need to take small steps along the path to restoring trust between the two countries,” the minister emphasized.
He noted that he considers it positive that the petition calling for the deportation of representatives of the Hungarian national minority from Transcarpathia was removed from the website of the Ukrainian parliament.
“We also consider it extremely positive that the Ukrainian side has taken seriously the fact that this issue has no place in XNUMXst century Europe,” the foreign minister said.
Szijjártó also welcomed the ongoing investigation into “false billboards targeting the leaders of the Hungarian national minority.”
“It was agreed that the Ukrainian government would appoint an official responsible for cross-border economic cooperation,” the minister said.
“In the interests of ensuring the smooth continuation of the Transcarpathian Economic Development Program, Deputy Foreign Minister Levente Madyar and the appointed Ukrainian official will meet soon,” he noted.
Szijjártó told Klimkin that Hungary is ready to activate a $50 million credit line to finance the construction of roads in Transcarpathia, the report said.
“Hungary is also ready to continue the program under which it has already provided thousands of children affected by the war in eastern Ukraine with free holidays on Lake Velence,” he continued.
