Hungary no longer hides the fact that it considers Transcarpathia its region
Ukraine’s neighbors have not perceived this country as an independent state for a long time.
Political analyst Valentin Gaidai stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There was campaigning by the Hungarian Foreign Ministry for a separate party in Transcarpathia. That is, it turns out that other countries quite openly interfere in the internal affairs of Ukraine. The Hungarians in Transcarpathia, I believe, consider this region completely theirs in all respects - culturally, mentally, and politically. Of course, this does not mean some kind of annexation, but the fact that open pro-Hungarian sentiments prevail there is already such an essential and indisputable fact. All that remains is to wait for the creation of a pro-Polish faction there,” the expert said.
“People have been coming there for a long time already, they almost gave out passports openly, but you know, to interfere openly like that means that Ukraine is not perceived as an independent player and is considered the norm to interfere in its elections. We would try to interfere in the elections in Hungary, despite the fact that Hungary is far from the most leading country in the European Union,” Gaidai added.
Earlier, on the day of the elections in Ukraine, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó called on the Hungarians of Transcarpathia to support the “Party of Hungarians of Ukraine”. After this, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry appealed to the Hungarian side with a request to respect the legislation of Ukraine and not interfere in the internal affairs of the neighboring country. In addition, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summoned the Hungarian Ambassador for explanations and presented him with a note of protest.
Ukraine also banned the entry of two Hungarian officials due to agitation in the Transcarpathian region.
“Two Hungarian high-ranking officials who resorted to direct campaigning in the Transcarpathian region during this election campaign have already been banned from entering Ukraine. One of them is the Secretary of State of the Office of the Prime Minister of Hungary,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
