Hungary complains of intense international pressure over row with Ukraine
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó states that Hungary is under significant international pressure for blocking meetings of the Ukraine-North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) commissions, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is stated in a statement from the press service of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Szijjártó, Hungary is under strong international pressure to lift the Hungarian veto on further negotiations between NATO and Ukraine, and Hungary considers this situation unfair due to the fact that Ukraine is responsible for the current situation.
“Hungary will not succumb to international pressure and sacrifice the rights of the Hungarian people living in Ukraine on the altar of geopolitical interests. Hungary will continue to veto Ukraine's entry into NATO until it restores the rights previously granted to national minorities. If Hungary were to bow to pressure and “give up” the right of veto, it would be left without tools to protect the rights of Hungarians living in Ukraine,” the minister is quoted as saying in the message.
Szijjártó added that during the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels (Belgium) on April 27, he intends to inform his colleagues that Ukraine can achieve the abolition of the veto if it restores the previously acquired rights of Transcarpathian Hungarians.
Hungary calls the conflict over the language norms of the Law “On Education” the only problem of the deterioration of bilateral relations with Ukraine.
Earlier, Hungary issued an ultimatum and intended to block Poroshenko’s participation in the Ukraine-NATO summit. In June, a committee of the European Parliament will consider the issue of sanctions against Hungary.
