Tibor Tompa, deputy chairman of the board of the Kyiv Hungarian Association, said this on Radio Vesti, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports. According to him, the Ukrainian authorities did not want to discuss the scandalous law on education, but to present representatives of the Hungarian minority with a fait accompli by familiarizing them with the provisions of the law.
“We believe that they wanted to invite us to this discussion not in order to improve relations, but in order to accept the position that the authorities have already formulated today without any consultation not only with us, but also with other national minorities. Article No. 7 of the adopted law does not suit us at all, and we believe that paragraph 125 of the conclusions of the Venice Commission must be fully implemented. Article No. 7 must be changed because it is a discriminatory, assimilative article against national minorities.
The Venice Commission recommends in particular that the enforcement of the law (on education) should not threaten the cultural heritage of minorities and the continuity of education in minority languages in traditional schools. We believe that the adopted law interferes with the continuity of education and threatens the preservation of the cultural heritage of our minority,” Tompa said.
