Hungarians want to make an elderly Odessa resident punishable for a boat accident on the Danube
The Hungarian prosecutor's office has formally charged the 64-year-old Odessa resident, captain of the Viking Sigyn cruise ship, which collided with the Rusalka tourist boat on the Danube in Budapest, resulting in the death of 28 people, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Hungary Today writes about this.
“The 64-year-old Ukrainian captain of Viking Sigyn is accused of criminal behavior that led to mass casualties and 35 cases of failure to provide assistance after the collision,” the report said.
According to investigators, the ship's captain lost his vigilance while steering the ship for several minutes, which led to tragic consequences.
He also failed to maintain a safe distance and signal his intentions to overtake the excursion boat. The captain failed to fulfill his obligation to provide assistance to the victims after the collision.
The captain of the ship that crashed into the excursion ship was Ukrainian citizen Yuriy S.
He was arrested by the Hungarian police. Later, the court took the Ukrainian into custody.
On May 29, the large cruise ship Viking Sygin and the small pleasure boat Hableány collided on the Danube in Budapest. On board the latter were 35 people - 22 women, 12 men and a child, mostly tourists from South Korea. The powerful impact sank the boat in about seven seconds - only seven passengers of the Hableány survived. The body of one passenger has still not been found.
