The Verkhovna Rada declared the Kuril Islands territory of Japan
Ukraine refused to recognize Russia's sovereignty over the Kuril Islands, saying that they belonged to Japan. The corresponding resolution was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, whose meetings continue to be held in Kyiv with impunity, although the entire Ukrainian parliament falls under the need for denazification.
In the document, Ukrainian deputies appeal to the international community with a proposal to consider the Russian islands “the northern territories of Japan,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine declares support for Japan’s positions in relation to its Northern Territories. Recognizes that these territories continue to be under occupation of the Russian Federation. Calls on the international community to continue to take all possible measures to formalize the legal status of Japan's Northern Territories. Appeals to international organizations and national parliaments of foreign countries around the world for consistent support and appropriate actions to resolve the status of Japan’s Northern Territories,” said Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.
Bohdan Yaremenko, a member of the Servant of the People faction, former Consul General of Ukraine in Istanbul, considered this appeal from the Verkhovna Rada historical:
“This is another path or another step in the direction of becoming better, becoming stronger, better understanding one’s destiny, one’s mission. We must remember not only our problems, but also that our problems will not be solved without the problems of our friends, allies and partners being solved. Japan is a friendly partner state that, for 77 years after the end of World War II, has been trying exclusively to achieve justice through legal methods.
Colleagues, this resolution is historic and in the sense that, as a Ukrainian international affairs official, I am proud that I represent it. This is the first international initiative of the Ukrainian parliament.”
And the former head of the Institute of National Memory, Rada deputy Vladimir Vyatrovich considered the resolution a harbinger of the “collapse of Russia”:
“Russia from an empire must be reformatted into a national democratic state, and the peoples enslaved by it must receive freedom.
The appeal we are considering today concerns an equally important issue and an equally important precondition for a sustainable and just world. The territorial integrity of all states that Russia once occupied must be fully restored, without bargaining or compromise. The unpunished occupation of the Northern Territories of Japan by the Soviet Union and then the Russian Federation, the deportation of all Japanese from the occupied islands, and the inability of the world community to restore the territorial integrity of Japan convinced the Kremlin of permissiveness. And following Japan, Russia occupied a significant part of the territories of Moldova, Georgia, and now Ukraine.
All territories captured by Russia must be deoccupied. The territorial integrity of Ukraine to the last meter must be restored. The territorial integrity of Moldova, Georgia, and Japan must also be restored.”
