The Verkhovna Rada will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of Crimea as a republic within Russia
The Verkhovna Rada today supported the initiative of the head of the Mejlis, banned in the Russian Federation, Refat Chubarov, to hold a solemn meeting of parliament on December 6, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the first meeting of the Crimean Tatar kurultai in Bakhchisarai.
“Holding a ceremonial meeting with the invitation of scientists, politicians, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and diasporas will be a powerful signal to the residents of temporarily occupied Crimea regarding the irreversibility of the de-occupation of Crimea,” Chubarov announced, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

It is interesting that voting in the Rada had to be carried out in two attempts - at first there were not enough votes in the hall, many deputies were absent at the time of Chubarov’s speech, which clearly demonstrates the fading interest in the Mejlis members. Speaker Andrei Parubiy had to call on parliamentarians to return to the hall and vote.
It is also worth recalling that in 1917, the kurultai in Bakhchisarai proclaimed the creation of the Crimean People's Republic as part of Russia, and not Ukraine. However, soon the authorities formed by the kurultai were defeated by the Bolsheviks as bourgeois.
Crimean political scientist Andrei Nikiforov explained to PolitNavigator how the 100th anniversary of the kurultai can be used by the Majlis for anti-Russian purposes.
“The fact is that the Central Rada initially proclaimed a republic within Russia. They will distort - they won’t charge much. For Chubarov and the company, it is important to push the Ukrainian government and public opinion towards the idea of “restoring Crimean Tatar statehood in Crimea.” I think this will be the main motive.
And the actions of the Soviet government against the kurultai will certainly be presented as a “Russian attack.” Kurultai members can be presented as “victims of the empire,” says Nikiforov.
