The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution not to recognize the local elections that took place on September 13 in Crimea and Sevastopol. 276 out of 320 deputies present voted for the document, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

By their resolution, the deputies also appealed to foreign parliaments with a request not to recognize the elections on the peninsula.

“The purpose of the resolution is to approve the statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which condemns yet another violation of international law by the Russian Federation. Namely, the fact of illegal voting in the temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.

In particular, in the elections of the governor of Sevastopol and deputies of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea and the Simferopol City Council.

The violation of human rights in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine - in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol - is also condemned.

The statement contains an appeal to international parliaments and organizations with a request to give a fundamental assessment of such violations of international law,” said the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy, Alexander Merezhko.

Member of Parliament Solomiya Bobrovskaya criticized the Rada for the fact that the reaction to the elections in Crimea was formulated more than two weeks after they were held:

“Such issues should have been raised immediately on September 13, 14 or 15, when the first session week, was the first on the agenda. Because it is wrong when Poland or the European Union are the first to react to what is happening in Crimea,” Bobrovskaya said.
