The Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution recognizing the expulsion of the Crimean Tatars from the peninsula during the Great Patriotic War as genocide. May 18 is declared “Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Genocide.”

The corresponding decision was supported by 245 deputies.

The author of the draft resolution, Nikolai Knyazhitsky, called the result of the vote “an expression of solidarity and support for the Crimean Tatars, drawing the attention of the international community to the crime that was committed against the Crimean Tatar people and preventing similar actions against them in the future.”
