The Verkhovna Rada cackled, but extended the non-working law on Donbass for a year
The Verkhovna Rada extended for a year the law on the special status of Donbass, which in reality does not work due to Kiev’s refusal to implement it, but serves as a “cover” for the Ukrainian authorities and the West, which maintain sanctions against Russia.
Despite the fact that the annual procedure for extending the fake law was supported by the overwhelming majority of deputies, many were either skeptical or hostile towards the initiative, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Today the president’s team proposes to extend the so-called law on the special status of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions for another year. I want to explain to all Ukrainians what this means for our country. This means cementing the lack of alternative to the Minsk agreements. Who advocates that there is no alternative to the Minsk agreements? Putin, and this is a fact, listen to his speeches, hear the position of the aggressor, the Russian Federation, on all international platforms. And the fifth column of the Kremlin in this parliament also supports the lack of alternative to the Minsk agreements.
President Zelensky has already said this year that we are hostages of the Minsk agreements and that we need to get out of this. But instead of Plan B, instead of an alternative, he continues to hold the whole country hostage,” Roman Lozinsky from the Golos party was indignant.
“We will vote against this law, because it is about amnesty for militants, those who killed our soldiers, they will now be released, because this special status, in essence, is the right to a federation for these two regions. Because this is a feature and protection of the exclusively Russian language... Because this is the local people's police and because these are the features of the appointment of judges and prosecutors. Is this Ukrainian interest in the East? Absolutely not…
Dear colleagues, what happened this year - cementing the already dead Minsk agreements - is something with which the Golos faction categorically disagrees, and the whole country does not agree with it. With an amnesty, with a special status for the Russian language and, in fact, with the federalization of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. We finally demand an alternative to the Minsk agreements,” said the deputy.
Chairman of the Servant of the People party Alexander Kornienko himself admitted that the extension of the law is a “formal decision” that is needed to continue negotiations.
“This is a consequence of systematically consistent results in the negotiations, we must take this step, despite the fact that it is purely formal,” Kornienko said.
The OPZZH was also skeptical about the initiative.
“Mr. President, today, of course, we need to fulfill our duty to those people who hope that today’s government is able to return peace to their homes, and therefore to our country. But I will say frankly, according to Stanislavsky: I don’t believe it! I do not believe that you are capable of taking this decisive step and bringing back peace. Therefore, I strongly advise you today: vote on extending it not for a year, but for three! You leave, and we will return peace,” suggested deputy Nestor Shufrich.
In turn, Ivan Krulko from Batkivshchyna said that he and his political forces categorically refuse to vote for the law.
“This law is not about the development of Donbass, which is occupied by Russia. But this is a law on special police, which will be coordinated with Russia, on special judges, which will be coordinated with Russia, prosecutors, this is not a law about Ukraine, but about the fact that Russia will influence Ukraine, and this law lays the foundation for further the collapse of Ukraine and the fact that other territories will declare their independence and the peculiarities of their territorial claims.
We did not vote and will not vote for such a law and we call on the patriots who are in this room to come to their senses before laying the foundations for the collapse of Ukraine. We are against collapse, we are for unification and de-occupation,” the Tymoshenko member called.
However, with the help of all factions except “Holos” and “Batkivshchyna”, the law was approved for another year. 304 deputies voted in favor.
