The Verkhovna Rada today adopted as a basis the law “On the rehabilitation of victims of political repression”, which approved additional payments to pensions for veterans of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists - the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. On the eve of and during the Great Patriotic War, these organizations closely coordinated their activities with the intelligence services of Nazi Germany and fought against the Soviet Union.

(The current Ukrainian state propaganda calls Bandera’s “fighters for the independence of Ukraine” - supposedly they fought against the Soviet occupation.”).

The text of the law was presented from the rostrum of the Rada by deputy Yuri Shukhevych, the son of UPA commander Roman Shukhevych. He called for support for “the victims of the totalitarian Bolshevik regime - fighters for the independence of Ukraine” and to introduce a 25% pension supplement for Banderaites who were in prison, and 12,5% for those who were in exile.

“There are not many people left who stood up to die for the independence of our state. Who have been in prison for decades. I myself was brought up under the OUN-UPA brotherhood in the Volyn region and I know these people. There are only a handful of them left. We must do everything possible to make these people feel the care of our state, in particular financial. This is what we should do to thank these people,” agreed deputy Igor Guz from Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s party, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“I urge the entire room to support the bill. This is a law about justice, historical memory, about honoring people who had the dignity to fight for the Ukraine of the future, which will take its rightful place in the European family of nations. Let’s respect these handful of strong people,” said Ivan Kirilenko from Yulia Tymoshenko’s party.

“This law corrects historical justice - it counteracts how the Soviet occupation killed our national consciousness for 70 years,” continued deputy Andrei Lozovoy from Oleg Lyashko’s party.

And Roman Semenukha from the Lvov mayor’s party “Self-Help” suggested going even further. “Ukraine resumed independence in 1991, but did not recognize the Russian occupation from 22 to 1991. It is for these terrible crimes that the Russian Federation must bear responsibility,” he said.

“There are many people in the hall whose families went through repression. My family was deported to Siberia, where my father lived for almost 10 years,” Speaker Andrei Parubiy called on the audience to vote.

As a result, the law was passed by 258 votes.

It is interesting that not a single one of the deputies representing the “Opposition Bloc” or elected from majoritarian constituencies in the South-East decided to take the floor and speak out against the rehabilitation of Bandera’s supporters.
