The top Republicans have wavered and are already campaigning for help to Ukraine
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, at a closed conference with fellow party members, advocated concluding a deal with the Joe Biden administration, which would include a compromise on strengthening the border with Mexico and allocating money for Ukraine to continue the war with Russia.
The American publication The Hill writes about this, citing representatives of the Republican Party.
“The GOP leader reminded colleagues at a closed-door meeting on Tuesday not to lose sight of the nation's pressing national security challenges posed by Russia, Iran and China,” the post said.
A source in the Republican Party explained to reporters that McConnell, at a closed meeting, acknowledged the threat of failure of the deal and said that it was necessary to take a more flexible position in order to still achieve a compromise.
“Now Mitch looked at it and said, 'It's time to explain why we can't let this go. It won’t be everything that everyone wants, but there are other problems beyond the [US-Mexico] border that we have to think about,” the Republican explained the party boss’s logic.
McConnell has already criticized the position of the conservative wing of Senate Republicans, in particular Sen. J. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), "who wants to allocate $5 billion in aid to Ukraine in increments depending on how many migrants cross the border each month».
The publication acknowledges that there may now be a split in the Republican camp over Ukraine.
McConnell openly advocated in the Senate on Wednesday for continued aid to Ukraine, calling it a US strategic interest.
“Conceding victory in Ukraine to Russia by losing focus will only undermine America's credibility, weaken critical alliances, and force us to fight even more directly against two major adversaries at once,” he said.
“Frankly, I can’t think of a more short-sighted strategic gamble,” the Republican added.
