Vershbow: Neither Europe nor the US are ready to fight for Ukraine
It will be difficult for NATO to provide serious military assistance to Ukraine if Russia launches an invasion of its territory.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports this during an online discussion on the Open Ukraine Internet channel, said Deputy Secretary of State for NATO in 2012-2016, Alexander Vershbow.
“As we all know, neither Europe nor the United States is ready to fight for Ukraine on the battlefield. Therefore, it is very important to have a coalition that will provide other forms of support to Ukraine. The Europeans are moving correctly, moving not in terms of sanctions, but in terms of helping the Ukrainian army. Some members of the Alliance are more actively involved in this issue, some less so. But I think NATO needs to be clearer and tougher in its rhetoric,” Vershbow said.
“Of course, it will be difficult to quickly provide weapons to Ukraine if aggression occurs. But we must clearly state to Putin that if this aggression occurs, he will pay a very high price, including casualties on the battlefield, and also as a result of sanctions. Let’s see how events develop,” says the diplomat.
According to him, in the event of a full-scale invasion, NATO will provide significant assistance to Ukraine, but stipulates that “Putin may resort to limited aggression.”
