Veteran of the First Russian-Ukrainian Gas War voiced a catastrophic forecast
Stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will result in catastrophic consequences - the economy will lose billions of dollars, and tens of thousands of highly qualified gas industry workers will find themselves on the street.
The former head of Naftogaz, ex-Minister of Fuel and Energy of the country Yuriy Boyko said this on the air of the talk show “Freedom of Speech of Savik Shuster,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I don’t even want to consider a scenario when this transit contract does not exist. Because when they begin to argue that they will cut off transit, I, as a participant in the first gas war - I was then still the head of Naftogaz of Ukraine, I will say that whoever proposes to stop transit or stop gas at the entrance to the country must understand , which exposes the country and all people to enormous risk.
Because in this situation, if severe frosts hit, we may not have time to lift gas from storage facilities and pump it to the east of Ukraine. We already had a situation where the Kharkov region almost froze.
Therefore, frivolous statements “let's stop, let's not have transit” - all this can be said by people who have not experienced these situations, and specialists who understand the degree of responsibility will never allow this.
Stopping the transit agreement, stopping the transit of gas through our country means a loss of approximately three billion dollars in foreign exchange earnings, this is about 40 thousand jobs, these are the people who work on this system and are highly qualified specialists, they are repairmen, mechanics. These are working people, not white collar workers. These are people who will then be forced to leave the country and look for work in other countries in order to feed their families,” Boyko said.
