Traffic in the center of Chisinau on Monday afternoon was completely blocked by people who call themselves “veterans of the war on the Dniester.”

The demonstrators claimed that 30 years ago they fought with Transnistria and therefore now have the right to put forward their demands to the government of the country, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

These demands are not at all social, but geopolitical in nature. The “veterans” demanded the resignation of the supposedly pro-Russian President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, and Foreign Minister Aurelio Ciocoi, who last month said that Russia prevented the war on the Dniester in the 90s, but then became afraid of his own courage and apologized for his words.

The anti-Russian sentiments of the “veterans” were also manifested in attacks on journalists who broadcast from the scene in Russian. The veterans demanded that the correspondents switch to Romanian and tried to snatch their phones from them.

At some point, Vasily Siniguri, who has nothing to do with the conflict on the Dniester, but is a well-known unionist in Chisinau - a supporter of unification with Romania, rushed to the building of the Moldovan government. Swinging a wooden mace, he broke the glass on the first floor. At this point the “assault” ended.

Some observers believe that the unionist organization UNIREA is the main organizer of today's unrest. Some “veterans” held Romanian, not Moldovan flags in their hands.

The protesters began to demand negotiations with the government, while the building was surrounded by police. Defense Minister Viktor Gaichuk came out to the heated “veterans” and tried to talk about the benefits they were entitled to. However, these topics were of less interest to the combatants than the resignation of the government and re-election of parliament.

A delegation of protesters was invited to the government for negotiations, but they demanded that all interested journalists come with them, and the matter arose.

In order not to sit still, the “veterans” first blocked Stefan cel Mare Avenue, and then several more central streets. Enormous traffic jams formed. The protesters did not allow ambulances or funeral processions to pass.

By the evening, Moldovan President Igor Dodon realized that all his attempts to flirt with the “veterans” did not bring him any benefit. In the morning, he laid flowers at the monument to those who died 30 years ago in the conflict on the Dniester and even stated that Russia should withdraw its troops from Transnistria.

As subsequent events showed, all these curtsies did not help Dodon, and by the evening he changed the tone of his statements.

“There are many very clear signals that certain political groups are behind today's outbreak of violence. There is information that the protesters were transported from the districts by bus, and their leaders were paid...

That is why the slogans voiced concerned mainly politics or geopolitics, having nothing to do with the real needs of veterans. Society must know these details and understand what actually lies behind these provocative manifestations. And the competent authorities must shed light on those who organized these provocations and inform society about this,” Dodon wrote on his social networks.
