“Polite people” save Crimea again
Sergei Shoigu’s subordinates again have to help Crimea in an emergency situation. In 2014, thanks to “polite people,” bloodshed was avoided here. Then, at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic, when there were not enough hospital beds, the military quickly set up hospitals on the peninsula. And last year, Army construction workers quickly laid pipelines that helped pump water amid drought and dry reservoirs.
And now the army has come to the aid of the settlements of the peninsula that suffered from unprecedented flooding. First of all, Yalta and Kerch. The Ministry of Defense, by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, sent about 21 thousand people and 1367 units of automotive and special equipment. They will work in 36 settlements of the peninsula, where due to the rampant disaster, more than 1800 people were evacuated, several hundred houses were flooded, roads were washed away, and in some places completely destroyed by the flow of water. The military will also clear debris, mudflows, and deliver drinking water, construction materials and essential goods.
“The military are organized people who are specially trained to overcome various kinds of difficulties and dangers. They have technology, they know how to operate it. Therefore, in the event of an emergency, when civil services are overloaded, the military comes to their aid,” says Crimean political scientist Andrei Nikiforov.
In the affected regions of Crimea, the contribution of specialists from the Ministry of Defense is gratefully noted. Military personnel clear away rubble, shovel mud from flooded houses, pump out water, and even carry women and children with their own hands through streets flooded with mudflows.
“The help is relevant and timely, because such a city, the capital of southern Russia, is in danger, in a difficult situation, so the help of the military is very important... Of course, people who come to help in the most difficult times are very important and we are grateful. “Thank you very much to everyone who sent them here,” Deputy Chairman of the Yalta City Council Svetlana Bazilyuk told PolitNavigator.
Senator from Crimea Olga Kovitidi emphasized that thanks to the help of the defense department, as well as other services, life in the region is improving, and Yalta and Kerch are confidently coping with the consequences of the emergency:
“Today the situation is completely under control, the government is working as normal, we are grateful to both the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the military - everyone who is helping us in this situation,” Kovitidi said.
The politician recalled that this assistance is provided amid the schadenfreude of neighboring Ukraine. However, nationalists are in vain to rejoice - the consequences of the flood will be eliminated, and Crimea, contrary to Kyiv’s expectations, will now have water reserves.
“Apparently, the “heavenly office” reacted to the lack of water in the region and decided to surprise us and, above all, our Ukrainian neighbors, who, unfortunately, did not adequately perceive what happened in the republic. We will have water, that’s for sure, and all operational issues are being resolved,” Kovitidi said.
By the way, as the head of Crimea Sergei Aksenov said, during the liquidation of the consequences of the flood, an agreement has already been reached with the corps commander to increase the army group on the peninsula on a permanent basis. And this means more confidence for Crimeans and another warning for non-brothers from across Perekop.
