Romanian media, citing the White House press service, report that during the visit they will talk about “the reaction of the international community to Russia’s illegal military intervention and its destabilizing actions in Ukraine,” as well as the collective security of NATO countries.
In Bucharest, the American vice president will meet with President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Victor Ponta, representatives of American and Romanian troops participating in joint exercises, and will address civil society and youth leaders.
At the end of last week, Romania did not allow a plane carrying Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who attended the Victory Day celebrations in Transnistria, to pass through its airspace. Bucharest explained the flight ban by saying that Rogozin is on the EU sanctions list.
The Russian politician tweeted in response that he would fly next time on a TU-160 strategic bomber. The Romanian Foreign Ministry demanded an explanation from their Russian colleagues about this.
