Vice-speaker of the Transcarpathian Regional Council announced the infringement of the rights of Hungarians and Russians
The new bill “On the State Language”, initiated in the Verkhovna Rada by Maidan deputies, severely violates the norms of the Constitution guaranteeing the rights of national minorities. The adoption of a new law threatens protests in Ukraine.
About it in an interview with Voloshyna.org.ua said the first deputy chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Council, a member of the faction “Party of Hungarians of Ukraine” Joseph Bort.

“Both I personally and the leaders of a number of public organizations fully support the statement of the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, who sharply criticized the draft Law of Ukraine “On the State Language.” This bill violates the norms of the Constitution, which guarantee the rights of national minorities to use their native language in various areas. In this case, we are talking not only about the Constitution, but also about the constitutional principles themselves, because the Basic Law states that human rights cannot be narrowed as a result of the adoption of new laws. This could happen in Ukraine if a number of existing laws or their norms are repealed,” Bort said.
“The legislation of Ukraine on languages consists of the Constitution of Ukraine, the basic law of Ukraine “On the languages of Ukraine”, the law of Ukraine “On the ratification of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages”, “On the Fundamentals of State Language Policy”, and the norms of other laws.
If a new bill is adopted, changes will be made to these and other laws, some will be repealed altogether... as a result of such actions by parliament, the “degree of tension” in society, already elevated, will go off scale. It is electrified by economic turmoil, as well as the continuation of military operations in the East, so introducing language restrictions is creating another global problem,” warned the Transcarpathian vice-speaker.
“If there are not so many Hungarians in Ukraine, only one hundred and fifty thousand, then, for example, about 10 million speak Russian. And for this reason, a social explosion looks quite possible. What forces does he benefit from? Just not those who want peace and tranquility, as well as the development of Ukraine.
Let us remember that when, in the first days after the Maidan, hotheads sought to repeal the Ukrainian law “On the Fundamentals of State Language Policy,” Speaker Turchynov was wise enough not to sign such a decision. Repealing a law does not mean solving the problem. We will have to answer for deepening contradictions and a possible split,” Bort warns.
